I think they are a very good VPS hosting provider. I use their "Essential VPS" package for $49/mon for a few years for hosting a corporate web site (based on Drupal and a MySQL database). The site responds quickly. I don't think they ever had any significant downtimes or network problems (so I cannot tell if their support is performing well too...).
I also like the fact that they say explicitly that they charge $1/mon for any additional IP address (not like many other sites that you need to negotiate purchasing IPs with them). Blog posts

In parts 1 and 2 of this series on disk storage, we looked at drive types and the benefits of using multiple drives in a RAID array. This week, we turn our attention to the final piece of the disk storage puzzle: the RAID controller. Beyond the drives and the array types and layouts, the RAID controller...

About a month ago, I was meeting with the ServInt Marketing team, discussing the fact that — while we have a relatively high proportion of customers who will shout from the mountaintops about how much they love us (thanks, guys!) — the vast majority of our customers are silent throughout the length of their stay...

suPHP and FastCGI require files and folders to have a specific set of permissions/ownership different from other handlers. Without these permissions set correctly you will see a lot of errors such as: “403 Forbidden”, “500 Internal Server Error”, or simply generic errors that commonly have the word ‘permission’ in them. It can be very time...

? I woke up this morning to the news that Norman Edmund passed away last week at the ripe old age of 95. To a man whose proudest possession is a 48-inch fresnel lens rescued from a discarded TV, this was like like learning Santa Claus had died. That’s because Norman Edmund was the founder...

A savvy web hosting customer knows the importance of a storage solution that allows users to access and interact with their data quickly. In Part 1 of Evaluating Disk Storage, we talked about the benefits and drawbacks of different types of drives. But to assess the reliability and performance of an enterprise storage solution, it...

Today PIPA was dealt a crushing blow when Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) pulled his planned cloture vote on the bill, agreeing to go back to the drawing board. The original vote was planned for Tuesday, Jan 24, but today he announced “In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday’s vote on the...

If you’re a subscriber to ServInt’s Twitter feed, you may have noticed we’ve tweeted nearly 30 separate “PIPA Facts” today. We did this because we wanted to empower all our online friends and colleagues with easy-to-remember information that would make phone calls to their senators as quick and painless as possible. It’s easy to get...

SOPA seems to be breathing its last! Although Rep. Smith has indicated that he’ll remove the controversial DNS blocking provisions of the bill, we’ve heard that the bill is so poisoned, hearings won’t resume, essentially killing the bill. That’s a huge victory for the Internet industry. This bill had big money interests behind it, and...

I just arrived back in Virginia after three days at International CES in Las Vegas, where I was spreading the word about the dangers of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) on behalf of the Internet industry. I had the opportunity to speak in front of large audiences about...

Your server is only as secure as what you choose to serve. Harsh words, but it needs to be said. At ServInt, we work very hard to deliver servers to our customers that are as secure as they can be. But every customization of and installation on a server creates holes in that security. It...

In a few hours, our COO, Christian Dawson, will be speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This is an important panel discussion involving SOPA and PIPA, but it is also a proud moment for ServInt. Before I came to ServInt, I spent years in the trenches launching various satellite-powered multimedia technologies —...

As many of you know, ServInt is in the midst of a beta test of the Jelastic Java cloud platform. Jelastic is a platform as a service offering that allows web developers to build and implement scalable Java applications in a cloud environment. It’s been a few months since the beta began and we thought...

We’ve all logged onto websites with an https://… url. That little “s” in https designates that the connection is using TLS/SSL encryption, an added level of security when interacting with a website. The most common places to see this are on sites that collect personal information or payments, basically anything private that users wouldn’t want...

In the wake of a well-publicized boycott campaign against GoDaddy, hosting providers are racing to try to come up with their stances against SOPA. I am proud that we don’t need to do that. Our stance on SOPA, its sister bill PIPA, and the bill from whence they both came COICA, is well known. We have spent...

Ever wonder where the MST looks to investigate events on your server when you submit a ticket? Knowing the locations of various log files for both cPanel and Plesk can be invaluable when trying to understand why, when or how an event occurred on your server. Below are breakdowns of log file locations for both...

With the holidays upon us, I thought I’d step back a moment from our insight-heavy “actionable intelligence” and ponder the season and our place in it. The holidays are a busy time for all of us. Whether it’s buying presents and visiting relatives, or getting those end-of-year projects complete at home and at work, it’s...

I just finished listening to 12+ hours of day one of the House Judiciary Committee Markup of H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and I have the scars to prove it. It was a brutal day of legislating. Four Congressmen, Reps. Issa, Lofgren, Polis and Chaffetz, stood out as having a firm grasp...

I just got done reading an excellent blog post by Dan Palotta on the Harvard Business Review site. It’s called “I Don’t Understand What Anyone Is Saying Anymore,” and if you’re a lover of words — by which I mean, if you love words enough to care about them and hate seeing them being abused...

When troubleshooting client servers, there are a few sites that the ServInt MST seems to go back to again and again. Whether it’s a reference page or a testing tool, the links below are just a few of the valuable resources our MST uses on a daily basis. And if you you’ve got a favorite,...

Choosing the right size server package—and choosing a package that can be scaled easily—are important decisions in any hosting purchase. Simply buying a server with enough CPU, RAM, I/O and disk space may not be enough for customers anticipating future growth or spikes in traffic. And upping the size and cost of a server package during (or...
